Why Water Pools on Asphalt Driveways in South Mississippi
Asphalt driveway drainage problems often show up as a puddle in the same spot after every rain. On a South Mississippi driveway, that puddle could point to a low spot in the pavement, runoff spilling over from the yard, or a slope that sends water toward the garage. Where the water collects is a clue. Watching how it gets there can help narrow down the cause.

How to Spot Asphalt Driveway Drainage Problems After Rain
Once the rain eases, take a look at the driveway while the water is still visible. Start at the puddle and look uphill for a trail of water, leaves, or sediment. Then check the downhill side. A raised lawn edge or a drain covered with debris can hold water in a spot that would otherwise shed it.
Take one wide photo showing the puddle in relation to the house, yard, and street. Take a closer photo of any cracks, depressions, or muddy edges. If you can, note how long the water stays after the rain stops and whether it happens after a routine shower or only after a heavy downpour.
Water Pools in the Middle of the Driveway
A puddle that forms in the same spot, especially in a wheel path, may be sitting in a depression in the asphalt. Look for dips, a cluster of interconnected cracks, or a patch that has settled. Those clues help a contractor decide whether the low spot is limited to the surface or whether the material underneath needs attention.
If the problem is isolated and the surrounding pavement and base are sound, asphalt repair and patching may be enough. If the base has settled or weakened, the repair may require removing the affected pavement and rebuilding the material beneath it before restoring the surface and slope.

A muddy fan across the pavement or a line of leaves along one edge can show where runoff enters the driveway. Follow the trail back to the lawn, a planting bed, or a nearby downspout. Also check whether soil or sod on the opposite edge has grown higher than the asphalt, trapping water on the pavement.
If the runoff starts off the driveway, the fix may start there, too. Redirecting a downspout, reshaping a raised lawn edge, or creating a shallow swale may help if the water has a suitable place to go. For an overview of how landscaping can capture and slow runoff, see Mississippi State University Extension’s guide to water conservation in the landscape.
Water Collects Near the Garage
Water against the garage door calls for a closer look at the driveway slope and the height of the threshold. The driveway may pitch toward the house, or there may be a dip just outside the garage. A contractor can check those elevations and see where the water could drain.
Depending on the site, the options may include reshaping the approach or installing a channel drain with a suitable outlet. The outlet matters as much as the grate. If the water has nowhere to discharge, it can back up at the same spot.
When Asphalt Driveway Drainage Problems Need More Than a Patch
The right repair depends on what is sending water into the puddle and what is keeping it there. A single low spot may be a localized repair. A sound driveway with a grade that can be corrected may be a candidate for resurfacing after the necessary preparation. If broad sections have settled, the base is failing, or the driveway slopes the wrong way, sections may need to be removed and rebuilt to establish a workable grade.
An overlay generally follows the shape of the surface underneath unless the elevations are corrected as part of the work. Before choosing asphalt driveway paving or an overlay, ask how the finished surface will direct water away from the problem area and where that water will go.
